SLD Eligibility Decisions: Differences Among Models

About the Webinar

This discussion of SLD eligibility uses scenarios to provide examples of what three different approaches to eligibility mean as to students identified and as to services provided. Those approaches are response to instruction only, response and low achievement and a combined approach that includes cognitive assessment to determine a student's pattern of strengths and weaknesses. The presentation will also provide: information as to critical elements that must be in place to use any one of these approaches; and how information gathered during these different models can inform interventions.

One of the primary objectives of this presentation is to further the discussion regarding SLD eligibility by providing a new way of looking at the issues. Additional objectives include:

  • Provide information and examples that will give participants
    • greater understanding of core similarities among different approaches to SLD eligibility decisions.
    • greater understanding of core differences among different approaches to SLD eligibility decisions.
  • Provide participants with real life examples and knowledge that will help them to discuss these issues with their respective schools or districts
  • Promote awareness of what is happening in other schools and districts
  • Promote discussion on this topic that is grounded in real life examples.
